Peter Pan, Part 2: Extension

Dogs As Nannies

James M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, loved dogs and frequently took walks in Kensington Park with his St. Bernard dog. For the nanny in Peter Pan, he chose a Newfoundland dog names Nana. Newfoundland dogs are known for their gentle temperament. They are patient, easy going, and friendly, but when needed they are also protective. These are all good qualities for a nanny. Barrie's love of his dog certainly influenced his choice to include a dog in Peter Pan.

There are over 400 breeds of dogs. The majority of breeds have only been around during the last 150 years. During Victorian times, the "dog fancy" became popular. Dogs were bred for certain characteristics.

Your assignment is to research breeds of dogs.  here is an almost complete list of dogs and their general character:  https://www.petfinder.com/dog-breeds?see-all=1

Suggested websites to help pick your Dog Nanny, try two of them and see what options it suggests based on the characteristics of the Nanny you are looking for:

Peter Pan Unit, Part 1

Peter Pan, created by Scottish novelist and playwright J.M. Barrie who first published stories in 1902 with Peter, Wendy and the gang.  Since then, there have been numerous works about the young adventureres Wendy, her brothers Michael and John, with Peter Pan and the Lost Boys as protagonists, while Captain Hook's Pirates and Tiger Lily and her tribe are the antagonists on the island of Neverland.

There are many adaptations to the original Story by J. M. Barrie, here is one of them:

A later adaptation is performed staring Cathy Rigby as Peter Pan, available online below:

Prepare to Perform Q4W3&4 April 1-15th

For the first two weeks in April, students will develop skills to improve their competitive performances. Here are a few methods that will work in different ways to create multiple "Memory Paths" to the information you are recalling.

Memorization Strategies

  1.  Read through it aloud. Repetition Memory: Work in small passages or Chunks at a time to make it more manageable.
  2. Copy the text by hand.  Motor Memory: This reinforces the information the same as reading it SEVEN TIMES!
  3. Read through the text and create a short outline or flowchart.  Spatial Memory creates a mind map for more visual thinkers.
  4. Have someone else read it to you.  Auditory Memory: Often more short term than other strategies.

Character Analysis

Use your knowledge of the character to build a complete and real person for your piece.  Paper scripts are a MUST, so you can add notes to them.  I have found an excellent resource at TheaterFolk.com about developing your character here.
