Peter Pan, Part 2: Extension

Dogs As Nannies

James M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, loved dogs and frequently took walks in Kensington Park with his St. Bernard dog. For the nanny in Peter Pan, he chose a Newfoundland dog names Nana. Newfoundland dogs are known for their gentle temperament. They are patient, easy going, and friendly, but when needed they are also protective. These are all good qualities for a nanny. Barrie's love of his dog certainly influenced his choice to include a dog in Peter Pan.

There are over 400 breeds of dogs. The majority of breeds have only been around during the last 150 years. During Victorian times, the "dog fancy" became popular. Dogs were bred for certain characteristics.
